The Institute of Strategic and International (ISIS) Malaysia, on behalf of ASEAN-ISIS, a network of leading think-tanks in Southeast Asia hosted the 32nd Asia-Pacific Roundtable (APR) from 7 – 9 May 2018, at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur. The event has brought together great minds from around the world to ponder, reflect, debate and explore solutions on the region’s strategic challenges. The APR has in recent years attracted the participation of over 200 policymakers, scholars, journalists and opinion leaders. Despite the 14th Malaysian General Elections on May 9, the APR was successfully executed and well attended. It saw an average of 200 attendees per day with understandably higher numbers on Day 1 and 2. Attendees on Day 3, the day of the GE, was around 160-180 persons.
This year, the conference focuses on the theme of “DISRUPTION: PEOPLE. TECHNOLOGY. POWER. SECURITY”. The welcoming and closing remarks were delivered by ISIS Malaysia’s Chairman and Chief Executive,Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa. while the opening remarks were delivered by U Khin Maung Lynn, the Joint Secretary of the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS) representing the Chairman of MISIS.
The 32nd APR was structured with four Plenary Sessions and six Concurrent Sessions. There was also an additional Special Panel on Foreign Policy in the Digital Age.

ISIS Malaysia will continue to organize Asia Pacific Roundtable (APR) yearly. The next APR is planned to be held from 24th to 27th June 2019. As a nonprofit think-tank and organization, ISIS Malaysia constantly depends on the support and assistance of external partners and friends in the execution of some of our initiatives-including the APR. Given the scale of the event this year, the Japan Foundation’s support has indeed been extremely valuable in realizing the success of the event. Additionally, given that APR is a prominent regional strategic and security themed conference, having prominent Japanese organization as a sponsor does well to balance the mix of sponsors and supporters.
The grant from The Japan Foundation Asia Centre was utilized to pay for Japanese Role Players’ International Travel and Accommodation Expenses, fees for loan of equipment and expenses for the preparation of APR 32 report.
