SEAFIC (Southeast Asia Fiction Film Lab) is a pioneering non-profit script and development lab created for Southeast Asian filmmakers in order to strengthen the quality of feature-length fiction films from the region. Each year SEAFIC invites 1st, 2nd and 3rd-time filmmakers to work with our script consultant and international experts for 8 months to develop their projects. It shall conduct three lab sessions: first in Chiang Mai in March, the second in Chiang Mai in July, and the final session in November. Coinciding with the final session is SEAFIC Open House, a public event in which talks, panels, screenings and other activities will be held for free, including the final pitch event with our SEAFIC jury. From the Organizer
With all five projects from our 3rd SEAFIC Edition already traveling to major festivals and project markets, SEAFIC aims to continue helping in the development of promising film projects from Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, the lab continues to travel to all major Southeast Asian cities every year to do talks and workshops in order to spread the knowledge about script development, funding and co-production to young filmmakers. Every year, our lab gains in international recognition as our projects win awards, receive international grants and become co-productions. Several of our projects are slated to begin shooting in 2020, so we cannot wait for these! The Japan Foundation Grant helps us greatly in both of the previously stated goals, as well as bringing people together from the region and beyond to co-produce and fund projects. Also, the Japanese mentors have been very important to our projects, giving valuable feedback to our filmmakers and even jumping in as producer on our 1st Edition project You ARE THERE. Meanwhile, funding a lab such as ours in Southeast Asia is not easy. We had some partners who have had to withdraw, such as Link of Cine-Asia and TorinoFilmLab, but in their places we also have new partners who capably fill in the gaps. Long-term funding prospects for SEAFIC is still our primary concern, but for now, 2020 is fully funded, and we will work on the funding for 2021 and beyond in the first few months of 2020. SEAFIC’s curriculum, applicants, selection and international collaborations still continue to be our main strengths, so no issues on these. But we hope that, through the good work that we do, the acclaim that our lab and our projects have received as well as continued support from our partners, SEAFIC can continue on and help make films that resonate around the world.
