This is a documentary production about the legendary Japanese rock band named Speed, Glue, and Shinki. The band was active in the early ‘70s, and was composed of Filipino rock legend Joey “Pepe” Smith, popular Japanese-Chinese guitarist Shinki Chen, and legendary Japanese bassist Masayoshi Kabe.
In shooting the documentary, we brought Mr. Smith to Japan to search for his long-lost band members. After days of searching, we found Mr. Chen and Mr. Kabe, and we reunited the three for one night. They were old and sick, and unable to play music, but we recorded hours of conversation between them, and we secured verbal permission to use the band’s recordings.
During the course of the shoot, we also explored the Japanese music scene, and interviewed multiple sources about the band and its place in Japanese music. They are being called the most important band of that era. The documentary also dwells on the character of Mr. Smith, his past as a young rocker in Japan, and how this affected his becoming the “father of Filipino rock music”. Mr. Smith is the protagonist of our documentary.
