Business researchers in Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand researched the state of capitalism and management in Southeast Asia, comparing them with the ideas and practices of Shibusawa Eiichi, and seek to publish their results in FY 2018 in the Japanese and English languages. In 2015, a workshop was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and primarily Indonesian researchers reported on their various research, and held discussions with other researchers. Through this, the current situations and obstacles in research were made clear, allowing confirmation of the direction of future research. Since the workshop was a rare opportunity for experts on economic and business history from Indonesia, Thailand and Japan to gather, a public lecture and exchange of opinions was held, inviting business leaders from Indonesia and Japan for the purpose of deepening mutual understanding of the economic history and conditions of both countries.

From the Organizer
Due to this project enabling young researches from Indonesia and Thailand to participate alongside business Japanese and western business researchers, it served as an opportunity for report and the accumulation of research experience, contributing in particular to training of researchers in the field of business history, with which Southeast Asia lacks sufficient business research experience. The workshop served simply as a place for sharing of research results, and since the research taking place depended entirely on the researchers themselves, there was some variance in how far they had advanced in their research. In the future, we’d like to select leaders among the participants from Indonesia and Thailand, allowing steady individual progression of research with detailed contact between the researchers toward the final objective of publication of their results.
